CORONA DOCUMENTARY CAPTURES HOPE, RESILIENCE
Olney, MD – A new documentary film about life in the early days of the corona pandemic captures voices from around the country with stories of resilience, creativity, and resolve. Called “Navigating the Curve”, the film showcases fresh perspectives on the emerging crisis with intimate first-person accounts of life suddenly and unexpectedly transformed. The 44-minute production appears online here.
With film crews largely unable to do normal production work due to social distancing requirements, producer/director Michael Starobin took the unusual step of coaching those who appear in the film to shoot their own interviews using whatever tools and skills they may have on hand. From retired math teachers to out-of-work digital media experts to Ph.D. college deans, “Navigating the Curve” captures a unique moment in time with a rawness and authenticity that resonates deeply in a socially isolated, yet endlessly online age.
Starobin called the technical limitations facing this production an unexpected opportunity. “By embracing the wide range of skills and technical capabilities from interview subjects around the country, I realized that viewers had a chance to see themselves reflected in the way stories were told just as much as in what the stories had to say. Some of the footage is rough-hewn, some polished, but it’s all beautiful in its clarity and openness.”
The production schedule was ferocious, with the goal of reflecting the national mood while everyone was still trying to get used to new realities. Starting in late March with an initial survey of more than 150 possible contributors, Starobin completed the film in the first week of May. Various connecting sequences in the film were shot in Maryland, with Starobin turning to his own family to step in as crew using minimal equipment.
